Northwood canola plant shuts down

NORTHWOOD, N.D. (AP) — A canola crushing plant in the northeastern North Dakota town of Northwood has temporarily shut down and laid off about 20 workers.

Northwood Mills plant manager and co-founder Clarence Leschied cited poor demand in the canola oil market. He said the plant hopes to reopen when market conditions improve, though he didn’t know when that might be.

The plant began operations in July 2007 crushing soybeans for the biodiesel market, but switched to crushing canola for the food market about a year ago.
