A rough second half sunk the Jamestown College men’s basketball team on Friday night in Rapid City, S.D.

“We really had trouble scoring in the second half,” Jimmies coach Jeff Trumbauer said. “We only scored 22 points in the second half and they scored 40.”

That turned the tide in the Hardrockers’ favor in a big way. After playing to a 32-32 halftime tie, South Dakota Mines pulled away for a 72-54 Dakota Athletic Conference victory.

“We played an OK first half,” Trumbauer said. “We made about six defensive errors that cost us. Robbie Fedor had three threes in the first half, and we know he’s a great shooter. We can’t lose a guy like that. And then their other shooter (AJ Trennepohl) had three threes in the second half.”

After shooting 48 percent (13 for 27) in the first half, JC cooled down considerably after the intermission. The Jimmies connected on only 8 of 24 from the field (33 percent) in the second half.

“Tech did a very good job defensively,” Trumbauer said. “We were having trouble in our motion so we looked at some sets to get some easier scoring opportunities but that was a mixed bag at best. They did a good job of taking us out of out game.”

While the Jimmies were going ice cold, the Hardrockers singed the nets in the second half. South Dakota Mines (14-6, 3-3 DAC) connected on 15 of 23 second-half field-goal attempts, shooting 65 percent.

Trennepohl scored 14 points to lead the way, while Fedor and Scott May each chipped in with 12.

Byron Jones led the Jimmies (9-10, 2-4 DAC) with 15 points. John Peabody had 11 points and seven rebounds and Jacob Kelsey added 10 points.

“They really focused on John and we did not do a good enough job of getting him the ball,” Trumbauer said.

For the second straight game, the Jimmies struggled in the second half.

“We’re a young team and again we played a good first half and we didn’t sustain it in the second half,” Trumbauer said. “We have to learn to improve on it in the second half instead of regressing.”

The Jimmies travel to No. 11-ranked Black Hills State on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets defeated Valley City State 90-76 on Friday night.
