GRAND FORKS (AP) — Country singer James Otto grew up in several states but says his childhood time in North Dakota was key to his career.

Otto, back in the state for a pair of concerts, said he first started singing as a toddler on his grandparents’ rural Finley farm. He said he began playing guitar, violin and saxophone while growing up in Valley City and Fargo.

And Otto said it was while singing in the Red River Boy Choir as an elementary school student that he first started thinking seriously about a music career.

Otto had the No. 1 song on Billboard’s 2008 year-end Hot Country Songs chart, “Just Got Started Lovin’ You.” He also was nominated last year for new artist of the year by the Country Music Association.
