Depth helps JHS gymnasts

The Jamestown High School gymnastics team was not quite on top of their game on Friday in Minot, but things turned out all right.

Minot outscored the Blue Jays 146.450-141.500 in a dual meet. But on a night when things weren’t totally clicking, coach Dave Tews was happy with the result.

“You know, last week we had our lowest score of the year and we performed like we scored,” Tews said. “We didn’t perform real great today. We were just this close here and just a little off there, but at the end we scored 141.

“Our depth kind of saved us. When it was all said and done, our score came out OK. We scored 35 on every event, and we don’t always do that.”

Misha Taylor led a 1-2-3-4 finish by Minot in the all around with a 36.575.

Alex Lind led the Blue Jays, finishing fifth in the all around with a 34.950. She won the bars with a 9.550.

“She had a great routine, but she had a major break on that, too, or she might have had a 9.7 of a 9.8,” Tews said. “There was one time she bobbled a bit. We were thinking she had a 9 and then the scores came in and it was a 9.5.”

Lind also hit a 9.150 on the floor, good for a fifth-place finish.

Kaitlin Walsh and Nikki Iverson both scored a 9.075 on the beam, tying for second in the event.

Lind, Heidi Engels and Walsh all scored an 8.900 on the vault, tying for sixth.

“We’re happy,” Tews said. “We know we can pick up some more points.”

The Blue Jays compete in the Fargo Invitational on Friday.
