More than 100 cattle seized

MANNING, N.D. (AP) — Authorities say more than 100 cattle have been seized in two counties after they were found lacking enough food and water.

Dunn County Sheriff Larry Boepple said a total of 127 animals belonging to a Halliday-area man were seized in Dunn and Mercer counties.

Dunn County State’s Attorney Ross Sundeen said the cattle were taken to the Stockmen’s Livestock Exchange in Dickinson. Authorities said five of the animals died.

The manager of the livestock exchange, Larry Schnell, said the others were nursed back to health.

Sundeen said the owner of the cattle has not been charged with a crime. He is trying to determine whether severe weather may have been one reason for the animals’ condition.

“In a winter like this year that we’ve been having, a whole host of factors come into play when you make those kinds of decisions,” Sundeen said.
