Edgeley-Kulm, L-M-M, Ellendale win

Apparently, the cure for Edgeley-Kulm’s shooting woes was the Jamestown Civic Center.

At least it seemed that way for the first eight minutes on Friday.

The No. 4-seeded Rebels opened the Class B District 5 tournament with a 56-43 victory over No. 5 seed LaMoure.

In the early going, Edgeley-Kulm was hitting on all cylinders. The Rebels hit 6 of their 13 shots in the first quarter, jumped out to a 12-2 lead in the opening six minutes, and led all the way in advancing to the semifinals.

The fast start was huge for the Rebels.

“We haven’t been shooting the ball as consistently lately,” E-K coach Kevin Strobel said. “We got out to an early lead and that helped the kids relax and they kept playing hard.”

Aaron Stemen helped the No. 5-seeded Loboes get back into the game. He scored 10 of his team’s 18 first-half points and pulled LaMoure within three (21-18) late in the half.

But the Rebels scored the final five points of the half and opened the second half on a 10-3 run.

Taylor Erickson, who led E-K with 16 points, hit a pair of three-pointers to stake the Rebels to a 36-21 lead and they pulled away in the second half.

“Taylor’s been our most consistent outside shooter,” Strobel said. “He stepped up and hit a few big threes and he hit some free throws at the end that were big.”

Stemen scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for LaMoure.

Alex Knudson had eight points, six rebounds and 10 assists for Edgeley-Kulm.

The Rebels take on No. 1 seed Central Prairie in tonight’s 6:15 p.m. semifinal.

The Loboes play in the 4:30 p.m. regional qualifier on Monday.

L-M-M 76, P-B-K 50

No. 2 seed Litchville-Marion-Montpelier blitzed Pingree-Buchanan-Kensal early on.

L-M-M scored eight points in the first minute of the game. They opened on a 26-9 run and led 30-15 after the first quarter. They connected on 51 percent of their first-half field goal attempts (18 for 35) to build a 50-29 lead.

“The start had a lot to do with the tone of the game,” L-M-M coach Chad Lueck said. “That’s a good team out there. We know we can compete with anybody. And when we start out that way, we can be a good team.”

Travis Brandvold scored 17 of his team-high 21 points in the first quarter. He went 6-for-11 from the field, including 3-for-3 from three-point range, and 6-for-7 from the line. He also grabbed seven rebounds.

“Travis played very well,” Lueck said. “He was under control, he hit a lot of big shots. He stepped up and was a leader tonight.”

L-M-M sank nine three-pointers in the contest, getting three from Brandvold and two apiece from Brandon Larson, Chad Limesand and Ryan Hendrickson.

“We hit the open shots we needed to,” Lueck said. “That opened up the inside. We were able to spring Dillon Carpenter a bit in the second half thanks to the outside shooting.”

Carpenter finished with 15 points and Larson 10 for L-M-M.

Cale Thomas had a game-high 27 points and 10 rebounds for P-B-K.

Ellendale 69, BCN 43

Ellendale singed the nets all night, but especially in the first half.

The No. 3-seeded Cardinals shot 74 percent (17 for 23) in the first half, and finished the night shooting 58 percent (28 for 48) in a win over Barnes County North.

“We got good looks,” Cardinals coach Brian Vance said. “We’re probably not the most patient team, but we got good looks, and when you get good looks, most of them will fall.”

Nolan Hamar had a big game for Ellendale, hitting on 9 of 11 shots from the field for 20 points and a game-high eight rebounds.

“He’s been consistent for us all year,” Vance said. “He’s worked hard in the weight room and he worked hard in the offseason, so everything he’s gotten, he’s deserved.”

With Hamar drawing the Bison’s defensive attention in the paint, the Cardinals were able to knock down shots from the perimeter.

Tanner White and Ty Bommersbach each added 10 for the Cardinals, who used a 14-0 run of nearly six minutes in the second quarter to turn a 23-15 lead into a 37-15 advantage.

“Most teams key on Hamar in the middle,” Vance said. “So it does open up the outside. Then our guys have to be ready to step up and drain those open looks.”

Justin Magee led BCN with 14 points.

The Cardinals take on Litchville-Marion-Montpelier in tonight’s late semifinal, while Barnes County North takes on Pingree-Buchanan-Kensal at 4:30 p.m. in a consolation game.
