Walter studies to be physician assistant

Patrick Walter has returned to Jamestown after spending Jan. 26 to Feb. 20 at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Grand Forks, where he began advanced training as a physician assistant student. Walter is one of 61 students from a 16-state area to begin the clinical portion of the Physician Assistant Program at UND.

Patrick Walter has returned to Jamestown after spending Jan. 26 to Feb. 20 at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Grand Forks, where he began advanced training as a physician assistant student. Walter is one of 61 students from a 16-state area to begin the clinical portion of the Physician Assistant Program at UND. He will continue the educational program under the supervision and guidance of Dr. Robert Wells at MeritCare Clinic in Jamestown and will return to the university for periods of formal didactic instruction in May and September 2009 and April 2010. After graduation in May 2010, with a master’s degree in physician assistant studies, he will be eligible to take a national examination to complete the certification process.

PAs are health professionals who practice medicine under the supervision of a physician. In collaboration with his supervising physician, Walter will be able to participate in assessment, diagnosis and management of patients.

The Physician Assistant Program is located within the UND School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Department of Family and Community Medicine. More than 1,500 physician assistants have graduated from the program since its inception in 1970.
