The Carrington native and former University of North Dakota All-American re-signed with the Minnesota Vikings on Saturday.
Kleinsasser, a free agent, decided to remain with the team that drafted him in the second round in 1999.
The deal was finished Saturday, giving Kleinsasser $3.5 million guaranteed and keeping the North Dakota native in line to finish his career with the Vikings.
An infrequent target in the passing game, Kleinsasser has become one of the top blocking tight ends in the NFL.
Over 10 seasons, Kleinsasser has only 1,466 yards and six touchdowns receiving, but he’s a vital part of the Vikings’ rushing attack with his ability to seal the edge. He has blocked for a 1,000-yard rusher five times and has helped pave the way for five of the top six single-season rushing totals in franchise history.
“We’re excited to have Jim back,” coach Brad Childress said. “We wanted him back, and we’re glad he took time out from ice fishing to come in and sign his contract. Jim’s an important part of our offense and the kind of guy you want in your locker room.”
