Willy Marler clinched spots in two finals with strong swims in preliminary action at the state meet in Grand Forks on Friday.

The Jamestown High School freshman had personal best times in both the 50 and 100 free, going under the required time for first-team all-state in both races.

Marler touched in a blistering 21.95 in the 50, good for fourth. He was just as good in the 100, posting a sizzling time of 49.10 for a spot in the ‘A’ final.

Landon Ostlie earned a spot in the ‘A’ final in the 200 individual medley, just missing first-team all-state honors. The Blue Jay sophomore earned second-team status in 2:05.76, placing fourth overall. First-team all-state requires a time of 2:05.62 or better. Ostlie will swim in the ‘B’ final in the butterfly after posting a personal-best time of 56.65, earning first-team all-state honors in a deep and fast field. The top 11 times in the event earned second-team all-state honors or better.

The fly was a good event for the Jays. Senior Seth Roscoe earned the final qualifying time, touching in 1:00.13. Teammate Logan Rasmussen, a junior, is the first alternate after placing 17th — one spot behind Roscoe — in a time of 1:00.53.

The finals are set for today at UND’s Hyslop Sports Center.
