Stay safe while on the Run

The Runnin O’ the Green is an exciting event, but sometimes participants forget the most important aspect of the run — that it supports the Elks’ Camp Grassick and people in the area with cancer.

The Runnin O’ the Green is an exciting event, but sometimes participants forget the most important aspect of the run — that it supports the Elks’ Camp Grassick and people in the area with cancer.

We’re not saying don’t have fun or don’t drink beer. We’re just saying don’t forget to pay the event’s $10 fee. The money supports local people in need and an organization that provides summer camp experience to adults and children who wouldn’t otherwise get the chance.

And just as important, keep your wits about you.

If you’re going to drink, drink responsibly. Don’t drive if you’ve been drinking and don’t get in a car with a driver who has. Participants know this. We just want to remind them.

Cab companies staffed extra drivers for the evening and fundraising groups typically offer cab rides as well. Take advantage of these services.

The event is not only a good time for a good cause. It helps our local economy. Hotels are packed. Bars quadruple their liquor inventory to prepare for the demand and restaurants double their sales. In one weekend, participants spend almost $500,000 on food, liquor, motels, etc. This is good for Jamestown.

So enjoy the event, but use caution too. Pay the entry fee and stay safe.
