Artist works with students

Mary Zimmerman, a visual artist from Deadwood, S.D., has been working in the elementary schools in Jamestown teaching drawing to fifth-grade students. She is teaching students to really notice what they see so that it can be translated to lines and shapes. Students have also worked with shading, texture and color — the basic elements of art. She is an artist in residence through the Arts Center.

Zimmerman has been an artist in residence in the Dakotas for 26 years. She draws, paints and marbles paper. A professional artist, she was recently awarded a Bush Foundation initiative grant called Dakota Creative Connections.

Along with her art, Zimmerman does botanical inventories and is trained to do stream management to evaluate water quality.
