The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch to go into effect late tonight through Tuesday evening for the Jamestown area. A blizzard warning has also been issued for an area to the west of Jamestown including Linton, Mandan and Bismarck.

“The Jamestown area could end up in a winter storm warning rather than a blizzard warning, which would be one step up,” said Daryl Ritchison, meteorologist for Forum Communications. “But it is going to be a mess with rain changing to snow tonight. When it changes will determine how much snow you get.”

Ritchison anticipates somewhere between a half and 1 inch of precipitation from the system Monday through Tuesday. If the rain changes to snow Monday evening he forecasts total snowfall amounts of 7 to 10 inches. If the change doesn’t occur until Tuesday morning, the Jamestown area could receive 3 to 5 inches.

“Temperatures the rest of the week will be cold for this time of year,” he said. “Some areas, if the skies clear, could see lows below zero.”
