MEDORA, N.D. (AP) — Theodore Roosevelt Na-tional Park officials say they received nearly 400 responses during a three-month public comment period on the park’s draft plan to reduce its elk herd.
The plan has been more than five years in the making. It’s aimed at finding the best way to reduce the elk herd in the park’s south unit, which has grown to more than double the preferred size.
Options include volunteer shooters or relocating elk after checking them for disease, as well as rounding up elk and euthanizing them.
The National Park Service will name its preferred option later, after studying the public comments.
