Kelly Roemmich won the 400 hurdles at the University of Mary Invite in Glendive, Mont., on Friday in the opening outdoor meet of the season.

Roemmich’s win was the only victory for the Jimmies, who had seven runner-up finishes in the seven-team meet, with four of the seconds coming from the women.

Dickinson State, Black Hills State, MSU-Billings, Minot State and Gillette Community College joined the Jimmies and Marauders in Glendive. JC brought only about half of its team members to the meet.

Roemmich, a junior from Bottineau, was more than a second better than anyone else in the 400 hurdles, crossing in 56.01. Runner-up Darwin Schwartz of Minot State was second (56.01).

The JC men had two of the top outings in the pole vault. Andrew Stoen placed second to Jake Alexander of Mary, while James Vollmer came in sixth.

In the 4x400 relay, Nate Bivens, Nathan Christensen, Joseph Koerber and Roemmich combined to earn second-place honors in a time of 3:27.76, a little more than a second off the pace of Dickinson State (3:26.45).

Nathan Horgeshimer had two top fives. The senior from Lisbon placed fourth in the long jump and took fifth in the 110 hurdles in a time of 15.86.

Christensen, a freshman from Minot, added a fifth in the 800, posting a time of 2:00.51.

The sophomore from Buffalo, Mont., also placed in the 100 hurdles (eighth), javelin (sixth), high jump (seventh) and ran a leg on the Jimmies’ third-place 1600 relay team.

Emmylyn Bentley had one second, a third in the 4x400 relay and a fourth as part of a strong day. The Lewiston, Mont., native led a 2-3-7 JC finish in the 800 with Katie Conlon and Madey Hornung also placing.

Former Blue Jays Conlon and Hornung went 2-3 in the 1500 with times of 4:55.91 and 4:57.44 for personal bests. Bentley was less than four seconds behind Conlon, coming in fourth as they went 2-3-4 in the race.

AnnaLiesa Fauth’s career best of 59.30 gave the Opheim, Mont., native runner-up honors in the 400.

Freshman Katie Zent had PRs in the 400 (62.04) where she was fourth and the 200 (27.7).

Another freshman, Heather Cellmer of Jamestown, came in fifth in the javelin.

Ashley Cooper raced to a fourth in the 1500 and sixth in the 100 hurdles in her first collegiate meet.

Cambrya Belter, a freshman, was seventh in the 5000 and ran in the 1500. Teammate Valerie Wahl was eighth in the 5000.
