North Dakota AD wants nickname resolved

The University of North Dakota’s athletic director says the dispute over the school’s Fighting Sioux nickname and logo has affected a number of programs, including football. Athletic director Brian Faison said the Sioux might have been able to get the Minnesota Gophers on their football schedule if the issue had been resolved.

GRAND FORKS (AP) — The University of North Dakota’s athletic director says the dispute over the school’s Fighting Sioux nickname and logo has affected a number of programs, including football.

Athletic director Brian Faison said the Sioux might have been able to get the Minnesota Gophers on their football schedule if the issue had been resolved.

The Summit League announced Wednesday it has invited the University of South Dakota to join the 10-school conference beginning in July 2011. Commissioner Tom Douple said UND has applied but won’t be considered until the nickname issue is resolved.

Under a legal settlement with the NCAA, UND has until late next year to get the approval of Sioux tribes for use of the nickname and logo, or face sanctions.
