As part of her Girl Scout Gold Award, one teenager is promoting awareness of child abuse.

Lexus Haut, 15, is helping organize Pinwheels for Prevention along with Stutsman County Social Services.

Pinwheels for Prevention is a nationwide awareness effort, spreading the message that every child deserves the chance to be raised in healthy, safe and nurturing environments, said Lexus’ mother, Margo Haut.

Some things parents can do with their children include reading books, playing games and going to the park. Ten to 15 minutes a day can help a child learn, Lexus said, but it can also teach adults too.

As part of the awareness effort, Lexus and other Girl Scouts will pass out 4,187 pinwheels after the Shrine Circus Wednesday. The pinwheels represent each of the children in Stutsman County.

The El Zagel Shrine Club of Valley City and Jamestown 3-Ring Shrine Circus at the Jamestown Civic Center is set for 4 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Shrine Circus tickets are $5.50 for children and $9.50 for adults.

Proceeds benefit the Shriners Hospitals for Children.
