An 18-year-old Spiritwood woman was transferred to a Fargo hospital Wednesday afternoon after the car she was driving entered a lake, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
The woman, whose name was not released, was westbound on Interstate 94 about 5 miles west of Valley City at 3:30 p.m. when she swerved to miss a goose, the patrol said. The 2002 Pontiac Grand Am she was driving slid through the north ditch and into Hobart Lake. The woman and the car were submerged for about 30 minutes, the patrol said. The driver, who was wearing a seat belt, was unable to exit the vehicle. She was the only occupant.
The woman was rescued from the car by dive rescue personnel. She was taken to Mercy Hospital in Valley City, then transferred a short time later to Innovis Hospital, Fargo. Her condition is unknown, the patrol said.
Damage to the car was estimated at $7,500, the patrol said.
