BISMARCK (AP) — A pickup driven by a naked man crashed into the admitting area of the St. Alexius Hospital emergency room early Wednesday, police said. No one was hurt.
The driver was arrested. Police said he may have overdosed on a prescription drug.
Police Sgt. Dwight Offerman said the crash happened about 5:30 a.m.,
Police identified the driver as Nicholas Krush, 47, of Mandan, and said he was taken to neighboring Medcenter One hospital for treatment unrelated to the crash. He faces a May 18 hearing in Bismarck municipal court on a charge of driving under the influence of an intoxicating substance, police said.
Offerman said police are not sure what kind of medication Krush may have taken. He said police were told before the crash to be on the lookout for a black pickup from Mandan, driven by a man who had overdosed on what was believed to be prescription drugs and was heading to Bismarck for medical treatment.
The pickup went by the pillars outside the hospital entrance, through plate glass windows, went by a woman sitting at a desk and ended up near the emergency room waiting area, Offerman said.
“The vehicle ended up completely inside the building,” he said.
Officials of St. Alexius said the hospital resumed normal operations by 8 a.m., but had to clean up smoke and dust. Damage was estimated at more than $100,000.
Julie Arnegard had just arrived for work and was making coffee when the pickup came within inches of her.
“I thought I’d blown up the microwave ... and then I turned around and I saw it,” she said.
“It was very close,” Arnegard said, fighting tears. “There is a God; that’s all I have to say.”
Arnegard, who works in admitting, went home but came back to the hospital later in the day. Her husband brought her flowers.
“I guess he’s glad I’m around,” she said, laughing.
