Darrin Kreie was sentenced to 15 in years in prison Friday for gross sexual imposition, a Class A felony, by District Judge John Greenwood. He was also sentenced to 3 years in prison for each of three counts of corruption of a minor, a Class C felony. The sentences are to be served concurrently.

Kreie had pleaded guilty to the charges that occurred between 1997 and 2008.

The sentencing recommendation by the state was for 20 years in prison for the GSI with four years suspended. The state recommended three-year sentences for the corruption charges.

“There is a pattern of conduct with Mr. Kreie,” said Jay Schmitz, assistant state’s attorney. “He hangs out at the Y, meets and befriends young boys and then provides them with alcohol and molests them.”

Bill McKenzie, defense attorney, recommended a sentence of five years on all charges to run concurrently.

“The whole purpose of these types of cases is to treat them,” he said. “There is no point in locking him up and throwing away the key.”

Kreie said nothing during the sentencing.

Greenwood noted in the sentencing that Kreie was “efficient at finding victims and preying on them.”

Along with 15 years in prison the sentence included 10 years of supervised probation and registration as a sex offender and an offender against children for life.
