UND flying team wins 15th national title
The University of North Dakota flying team has won its 15th national title, with a record-breaking score.
GRAND FORKS (AP) — The University of North Dakota flying team has won its 15th national title, with a record-breaking score.
UND said the total of 469 points was 71 points ahead of the runner-up at the recent National Intercollegiate Flying Association competition in St. Louis. UND co-captain Ryan Guthridge won the National Top Pilot Award.
UND Aerospace dean Bruce Smith said the NIFA national championship is equivalent to NCAA championships for athletics. UND has won its 15 flying titles in only 25 competitions.
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University-Daytona Beach finished second this year and Western Michigan University third. The previous scoring record was 466 points, set by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University-Prescott in 2005.
