Calves die in Sunday fire

Six calves died in a stock trailer fire Sunday afternoon.

Six calves died in a stock trailer fire Sunday afternoon, said Wayne Fylling, Jamestown Rural Fire Department chief.

The fire occurred approximately 6 miles south of Jamestown on Highway 281 and 2 miles west.

The Jamestown Rural Fire Department was dispatched around 4:50 p.m. and was on the scene for about an hour, he said.

Six firefighters tired to pull out the calves but were unsuccessful, he said. The total value of the calves was $300.

The cause of the fire is unknown and is still under investigation, Fylling said.

The rural fire department was also dispatched to a fire in the Buchanan area early Saturday morning.

A passerby called the fire in, but it was later discovered as a controlled burn, Fylling said.

Four firefighters were dispatched at 2 a.m. and were on the scene for two hours after one of their trucks got stuck in mud, he said.
