Helen Fischer, 82, Edgeley, N.D., died Sunday, May 31, 2009, at MedCenter One, Bismarck, N.D.

Helen Elizabeth Baumgartner was born Sept. 16, 1926, in Strasburg, N.D., the daughter of Damian and Katherine (Scherr) Baumgartner. She grew up and attended Strasburg School, Strasburg. She worked on the farm. She married Leo J. Fischer on July 15, 1947, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Strasburg. They farmed in Hague, N.D., and then moved to Merricourt, N.D. In 1949 they moved to Edgeley. She received her certified nursing assistant certification. They retired from farming in 1990. He died in 1994 and she continued to live on the farm until 2001 when she moved to a nursing home in Edgeley. She was a member of Transfiguration Catholic Church and Altar Society, Edgeley. She enjoyed music, dancing, polka, German food and baking.

She is survived by five sons, Lester, LaPuente, Calif., LeRoy (Nanette), Placentia, Calif., Ervin and Allen (Kathy Vaughn), both of Edgeley, and Ernie (Beverly), Selfridge, N.D.; a foster son, Andy, Aberdeen, S.D.; five daughters, Elaine (J.D.) Christianson, Camas, Wash., Linda (Gary) Methven, Portland, Ore., Leanne (Dennis) Chalker, Aurora, Colo., Arlene (Jeff) Holomon, Cheyenne, Wyo., and Cheryl (Chuck Bossingham) Fischer, Williston, N.D.; three brothers, Anton “Tony,” Butte, Mont., John P., Portland, and Leo, Cuba, Mo.; a sister, Bernice Tate, Alder, Mont.; 23 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; two sisters, Dianna Baumgartner and Angie Ternes; and three brothers, Felix, Joseph and Lawrence.

Services: 10 a.m. Friday, Transfiguration Catholic Church, Edgeley.

Prayer service: 7 p.m. Thursday at the church.

Visitation: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Lisko Funeral Chapel, Edgeley, and one hour before the service at the church.

Burial: 10 a.m. Mount Calvary Cemetery, Edgeley.
