At last week’s Kiwanis meeting, Leo Johs introduced the speaker, Mike Williams, treasurer of the Stutsman County Fair, who spoke on the upcoming 112th annual fair and shared history on the fair. This year’s fair is set for July 8-11.

The fair continues to showcase 4-H events, the livestock sale, home and hobby exhibits, stock car races, rodeo and fair food. The Fair Board consists of nine members.

Williams said the original site of the fair was the east side of McElroy Park. In 1961, because of the expansion of fair activities — mainly the car races — the fair board and the James-town Park and Recreation Department agreed that a new location was needed. The Bureau of Reclamation agreed to lease the current quarter section of land to the Stutsman County Fair and later the land was purchased to make this site the fair’s permanent location.

The following officers were elected at the June 1 Kiwanis luncheon meeting and will serve Oct. 1 through Sept. 30, 2010: president, Galen Rasmussen; president-elect and membership chair, Kenrad Pederson; vice president and program chair, Tim Burchill; secretary and publicity chair, DeLette Winkelman; treasurer, Michael Grounds. Serving on the board of directors will be: 2009 to 2012, Sandy Franke and Jim Lees; 2009-2011, Don Bentz; and immediate past President Bob Welsh. Others serving on the board of directors are Claudia Holm, Claudia Jacobson and Jerry Ronholm.

Kiwanis and Rotary members cleaned up Camp Rokiwan May 28, getting it ready for the summer campers. Rotary prepared a supper.

Meals-on-Wheels volunteers for June 2 were Joanne Anderson, Bentz, Johs, Holm, Si Liechty and Don and Sharon Caine.

Following the June 8 meeting, some members cleaned up trash in a northeast section of Jamestown.

The next Kiwanis luncheon meeting is June 15 at the Lantern Room with Marv Bietz introducing the speaker, Vern Quam, Jamestown city forester.
