Morton hopes to regain use of tainted basement

The Morton County Commission has hired the firm that’s cleaning up Mandan’s underground diesel spill to design a water and fuel collection system for beneath its law enforcement center.

MANDAN, N.D. (AP) — The Morton County Commission has hired the firm that’s cleaning up Mandan’s underground diesel spill to design a water and fuel collection system for beneath its law enforcement center.

The design is expected to cost $41,000. Completing the system could cost another $175,000. The commission will contract out that work.

Rising ground water has caused water and fumes from the diesel spill to seep into the building’s basement. All the offices in the basement were relocated a couple of years ago, but the basement still is used for other purposes like storage.

County Commissioner Bruce Strinden said the water and fuel collection system could put the idle basement space back in use. He expects work to be completed by the end of the year.
