The Barnes County Historical Museum is hosting a new exhibit called “Through Their Eyes: Valley City Flood Paintings.” The paintings were created by Washington Elementary school students.

The objective of the project was for students to express what was significant for them during the two weeks that they were out of school during the flood. Students had to think through their idea from the earliest concept and take it through to the end, transforming the mental image into a reality that someone else could understand. For most of the students, it was their first experience with acrylic paint.

The images ranged in message from time a student spent lying around in bed playing a video game, time spent in other schools as far away as Montana or time with family. Some of the images are universal, like Sandbag Central, the portable toilets, dikes and water.

The exhibit will be open to the public during the museum’s regular hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

The museum is located at 315 Central Ave. N. in Valley City, N.D. A freewill offering is taken for admission.
