In an effort to combat impaired driving, the North Dakota Highway Patrol Southeast Region will conduct a sobriety checkpoint Saturday at an undisclosed region in Barnes County.
So far this year there have been 51 fatal crashes in North Dakota. Twenty-two of the 51 were alcohol related, the patrols aid.
The purpose of the checkpoint is to deter drivers from drinking, not to make a large amount of arrests, said Lt. Eldon Mehrer of the patrol in a press release.
“Due to the increased traffic during the Fourth of July holiday weekend, our goal is to ensure that families arrive at their holiday destinations safely,” he said.
Once the checkpoint is completed, troopers will patrol the area looking for impaired drivers.
