The Jamestown Fire Department spent a busy Fourth of July putting out fires started by fireworks. No injuries were reported and no serious damage occurred, said Deputy Fire Chief Gordie Christianson.
The department was called out three times Saturday. The first call came in at just after noon to a grass fire started by fireworks at 905 12th Ave. S.E.
The second call came in at about 5 p.m. Firefighters responded to a small fire at the skateboard park in McElroy Park. Christianson said when firefighters arrived they found a pile of burning fireworks, some of which would shoot out of the fire.
At 8:50 p.m. firefighters responded to another grass fire at Third Avenue and Ninth Street Northeast. Christianson said residents were shooting off fireworks down below the hill. The burning fireworks debris landed up top and started the grass fire. He said even as firefighters were putting out the fire, more were being shot off with sparks falling all around them.
Firefighters spent between 30 and 45 minutes at each of the fire scenes, Christianson said. There were no injuries and no serious damage.
