Rare fish shot in James River

Catching carp on the James River is nothing new for Wyatte Hantan. But the 16-year-old from Mitchell and a friend recently made a catch a state wildlife official says is ``fairly rare.'

MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) — Catching carp on the James River is nothing new for Wyatte Hantan. But the 16-year-old from Mitchell and a friend recently made a catch a state wildlife official says is ``fairly rare.'

Hantan was bow-and-arrow fishing with friend Michael McPeek north of the city in late June when he landed an Asian bighead carp weighing more than 15 pounds.

South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks says there aren't a lot of that species of fish in the James. That's a good thing — Asian bighead carp are considered a nuisance fish.

Hantan and McPeek weren't sure what they had shot. They had to bring it in to a local store and look it up in a book.
