SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — The federal prosecutor says a dozen people were taken into custody on Wednesday after a banner was draped over part of Mount Rushmore National Memorial.

U.S. Attorney Marty Jackley said the 12 were scheduled to make a federal court appearance later in the day.

The environmental group Greenpeace said in a statement that its members unfurled a 2,300 square-foot banner from the top of the mountain calling for an end to global warming.

Greenpeace said 11 people were involved and that they scaled the monument used existing rock anchors that are used by the National Park Service.

Climbing Rushmore can bring a trespassing charge.
