CINCINNATI (AP) — Home Run Derby winner Prince Fielder hit a three-run shot that got Milwaukee’s offense going, and the Brewers took a first step in turning themselves around after the All-Star break by beating the Cincinnati Reds 9-6 on Thursday night.
Fielder won the All-Star home run competition on Monday night in St. Louis. He got the Brewers started on their second-half quest — catching the Cardinals in the NL Central — by connecting in the third inning off Homer Bailey (1-1). Milwaukee moved to two games behind the idle Cardinals.
Braden Looper (8-4) went 5 1-3 innings and had three hits of his own, including a broken-bat, RBI single that extended Milwaukee’s five-run rally in the sixth inning.
Braves 5, Mets 3
ATLANTA — Chipper Jones drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning and the Atlanta Braves prevailed in the matchup of bullpens.
The Braves broke a 3-3 tie against the New York bullpen, which gave up two runs in two innings. Atlanta relievers pitched three scoreless innings.
Cubs 6, Nationals 2
WASHINGTON — Rich Harden allowed three hits over six innings, Derrek Lee homered and the Chicago Cubs beat Washington, spoiling the debut of Nationals’ interim manager Jim Riggleman.
Harden (6-6), who had won only one of his previous seven starts, improved to 4-1 on the road. He allowed an unearned run, walked none and struck out seven, including Adam Dunn three times.
A managerial change did little to ignite the Nationals, who have dropped seven of eight and own the majors’ worst record at 26-62. Riggleman, who previously managed the Cubs, San Diego and Seattle, replaced the fired Manny Acta on Monday after serving as his bench coach the first half of the season.
Phillies 4, Marlins 0
MIAMI — Jamie Moyer allowed one hit in seven innings to continue his domination of the Florida Marlins, Ryan Howard hit his 200th homer to sustain an unprecedented pace and the Philadelphia Phillies extended their winning streak to six games.
Ryan Madson and J.C. Romero pitched one perfect inning each to complete the Phillies’ one-hitter.
Indians 4, Mariners 1
CLEVELAND — Cliff Lee won for the first time in more than a month, allowing one run in his second complete game of the season.
Lee (5-9) hadn’t won since a three-hit shutout against St. Louis on June 14, a game in which he took a no-hitter into the eighth inning.
