BISMARCK (AP) — Nearly 300 North Dakota ranchers will receive a total of $1 million in compensation for additional feed transportation costs and feed losses caused by the harsh winter and spring flooding.
Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring said the money won’t completely make up for the losses, but it will help ranchers in their recovery.
The aid is through a new effort called the North Dakota Livestock Feed Transportation Program. It got a $750,000 grant from the federal Agriculture Department and $250,000 in state money approved earlier this year by the Legislature.
Goehring said checks were being mailed Friday. Payments average about $20 per animal.
