The Jamestown Public School Board approved spending about $85,000 on instruments for the district’s music programs at the board’s regular meeting Monday.

Music instructors had asked the board to budget $125,000 for instruments because many of the current instruments are old and worn out. All of the instruments purchased are new, said Ken Aune, Jamestown Middle School band director.

The instruments will be purchased from different music companies throughout the region and paid for with stimulus dollars.

In other business, the board formally approved reducing the tax levy from 185 mills to 110 mills for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2010. The reduction is part of a statewide plan enacted by the Legislature to reduce local levies and replace them with state funding. The reduction represents about a $350 property tax reduction for residents owning a $100,000 home.
