AG: Williams County commissioners held illegal meeting

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) — Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem says Williams County commissioners held an illegal meeting.

Stenehjem said they broke the state’s open meetings law in reaching a decision to seek the resignation of the county’s director of emergency services.

Two commissioners on May 8 met with the sheriff and human resources director to discuss the performance of the emergency services director. Stenehjem said the two commissioners did not constitute a quorum — but they were acting in an official capacity.

Commission Chairman Dan Kalil said that if officials had known the meeting was illegal it never would have taken place.

Stenehjem has ordered the commission to post notice of the meeting and prepare minutes.
