Jamestown High School students Samantha Albrecht, Barbara Trautman, Sara Davidson, Tatiana Letcher, Jennifer Neva, Madelyn Welding, along with their instructor Jay Nitschke, left June 17 for Spain.

After landing in Madrid the group visited the Prado and Anna Sofia Museums. Then they visited the Palacio Real, (the royal palace) which is used to greet visiting heads of state from foreign countries.

From there they took a day excursion to the Valley of the Fallen, which is a church and memorial to the people who lost their lives in the Spanish Civil War. From there they went to the city of Segovia, the site of famous aqueducts. They also visited the former castle of King Fernando and Queen Isabelle.

Next they went to Seville where they visited the cathedral where Christopher Columbus and his son are buried. They walked the river and saw the Tower of Gold.

The students spent nine days living with their host families in Talavera de Reina learning first hand the normal every day culture of a Spanish family and tasting the home cooking of Spain. Talavera is known as the ceramic capital of Spain.

From Talavera de Reina the group traveled to Toledo where they visited the Cathedral of Toledo, the Church of St. Thomas and the Transito Synagogue. There they were able to see the most famous of Goya’s paintings, the El Entierro del Condefe Orgaz. The group then traveled by train back to Madrid.

There they celebrated the U.S.’s Independence Day with a meal at the Hard Rock Café and attended a human rights parade. They spent time in the Pardo Park, where they visited a Crystal House. They also attended a bullfight and learned the various parts of the sport and why it is compared to a ballet.
