Grace City never trailed, while the Jamestown Tarno Tigers dug out of an early hole on the opening day of the state amateur tournament at Jack Brown Stadium.
Curt Jacobson spun a three-hit shutout as Grace City sailed through Mantador 6-0 in the Class A opener.
In AA action, the Tarno Tigers trailed 5-3 after two innings, but scored 11 of the last 13 runs of the game to beat the Edgeley All-Stars 14-7.
Grace City 6, Mantador 0
Jacobson allowed next to nothing in the first game Thursday at Jack Brown Stadium.
The former Midkota Mustangs standout fired a two-hit shutout as Grace City blanked Mantador 6-0 in the Class A opener.
Jacobson struck out 11 Mantador batters, allowing singles in the first and fourth innings and a leadoff double in the seventh, but that was it.
Grace City had just six hits in the game, but Gavin Black had three of them. The former Jamestown College baseball recruit went 3 for 3 with a pair of doubles. He scored twice, scampering in from third base on wild pitches in both the second and fourth innings.
Josh Bukowski added a double and scored in the fifth inning for Grace City, which had five of their six runs come across on wild pitches from Mantador’s Aaron Frolek, who went the distance and took the loss.
Grace City advances into the Class A semifinals to face the Jamestown Greyhounds on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The Greyhounds are comprised primarily of the Jamestown Post 14 Legion team.
Tarno Tigers 14, Edgeley 7
Everything was dropping for Edgeley early as the All-Stars scored five runs on nine hits off Tarnos’ left-hander Shane Schoenberg.
After scoring two in the first, Edgeley hung three more on the board in the second. Seven different players had hits in the opening two innings. Leadoff batter Tyler Jonas and No. 2 batter Shane Hendrickson each had two hits and scored twice in each of the first two innings as they jumped out to a 5-3 lead.
From there, however, Schoenberg settled in, holding Edgeley scoreless until the sixth when they scored twice.
Hendrickson led the All-Stars’ 12-hit attack, going 3 for 4. Mike Heinrich and Jonas had two hits each.
Nick Walden and Shane Schoeneberg each had three hits for the Tarnos, who scored at least twice in each of their last four at bats, highlighted by a four-run top of the fifth. Walden had three RBIs. Nick Ukestad had two hits and drove in three. Jason Scala also had two hits as all 14 of their hits were singles.
The Tarnos get the Enderlin Indies in the Class AA semifinals at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
