GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — Grand Forks' trash is about to start flowing south.

The city on Monday was to begin hauling its garbage to Fargo's landfill, after losing a bid earlier this month to keep the Grand Forks landfill open a month longer.

The federal government considers the Grand Forks landfill a hazard to low-flying aircraft because of the birds it attracts. The city wanted to keep it open until a replacement is finished in September or October but federal officials and the airport rejected the request.

Public Works Director Todd Feland says Grand Forks residents won't see any rate increases, but it will cost the city as much as $50,000 a week to haul the trash down Interstate 29.
