BISMARCK (AP) — More North Dakota farmers and ranchers are using computers for farm-related business.

The Agriculture Department said 49 percent of producers in a recent survey reported using their computers in their profession, up from 44 percent in 2007.

The percentage of North Dakota farms with Internet access remained stable at 61 percent, but more farmers are starting to buy products they need for their operations online. That percentage went from 9 to 12 in the two-year period. The percentage of farmers doing Web-based marketing also rose, from 10 percent to 13 percent.

The survey also indicated that dial-up is being phased out as a primary source of Internet access on farms. Fifty-five percent of producers in the survey reported having high-speed access, compared with 40 percent two years ago.
