MANDAN, N.D. (AP) — The city of Mandan has joined Bismarck in deciding against donating money to the expansion of the state Heritage Center on the Capitol grounds.
The Mandan City Commission denied the State Historical Society's request for $300,000. Last month, Bismarck city commissioners rejected a $1 million request for the $52 million project.
The Legislature earlier this year agreed to spending $40 million of state money if $12 million could be raised privately.
Mandan Mayor Tim Helbling says officials decided the money requested would be better spent on Mandan projects.
Bismarck officials decided against donating because it might open to the door to other groups that bring visitors to the city, and because Mayor John Warford said it is prudent to be conservative during the poor economic times.
