BISMARCK (AP) — North Dakota regulators want to assess the Keystone Pipeline another $50,000 siting fee, saying it’s a complex project.

The PSC originally assessed the pipeline company $100,000 to pay for inspections.

Commission Chairman Kevin Cramer said the $100,000 has been spent and the pipeline project is not quite finished. The PSC’s fee request goes to the state Emergency Commission, which will consider it next month.

Cramer said that in most cases, the commission has used just a fraction of the siting fees for inspections. But he said the Keystone project is more complicated, involving 218 miles in the state and some 600 landowners, and deserves more oversight.

The Keystone pipeline, owned by TransCanada Corp., is to ship crude oil from Alberta to refineries and shipping hubs in Illinois and Oklahoma.
