Tribal colleges given federal grants

Six tribal colleges in the Dakotas have been awarded education and outreach grants from the federal Agriculture Department. The money is part of $4.7 million in grants distributed among 22 tribal colleges in nine states under the USDA’s Rural Development Tribal College Grant program. Each of the tribal schools in North Dakota and South Dakota is being awarded $220,000.

BISMARCK (AP) — Six tribal colleges in the Dakotas have been awarded education and outreach grants from the federal Agriculture Department.

The money is part of $4.7 million in grants distributed among 22 tribal colleges in nine states under the USDA’s Rural Development Tribal College Grant program. Each of the tribal schools in North Dakota and South Dakota is being awarded $220,000.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said the money will help the schools make infrastructure improvements.

The Dakota schools awarded the grants are: United Tribes Technical College, Cankdeska Cikana Community College, Turtle Mountain Community College, Sitting Bull College, Oglala Lakota College and Sisseton Wahpeton College.
