FARGO (AP) — Garbage pickup is changing in Fargo.

The city's solid waste utilities manager, Terry Ludlum, says recyclables will be picked up every other week. He says homeowners have been given bins to designate which week to put them out.

The city also has switched to garbage trucks with an automated pickup system. Ludlum says the automated trucks can serve more than 600 homes a day, which is about 200 more than the current trucks.

City officials say voluntary recycling kept about 5,300 tons of waste out of the landfill in 2007. They figure that's about 24 percent of total household waste. Ludlum says officials would like to see it closer to 50 percent.
