Park gets more than 11,000 comments on elk plan
The superintendent of Theodore Roosevelt National Park says park officials have received more than 11,000 comments on a proposal to thin the park's elk herd by using teams of shooters, including volunteers under park supervision.
MEDORA, N.D. (AP) — The superintendent of Theodore Roosevelt National Park says park officials have received more than 11,000 comments on a proposal to thin the park's elk herd by using teams of shooters, including volunteers under park supervision.
The 30-day comment period ended last week.
Park Superintendent Valerie Naylor said comments came from all over the country, including a ``good number' of form letters. She said the next step is to analyze the comments.
Naylor said the Park Service hopes to have a final environmental impact statement at the end of the year, and then make its decision.
The park is seeking to reduce its herd from the current 900 elk to somewhere between 100 and 400 animals.
