RYDER, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota is losing another small-town school because of declining student enrollment and finances.
North Shore Elementary in Ryder is to close at the end of the school year, with students attending classes in Plaza next year.
Lorna Hanson, co-business manager for the Lewis and Clark School District, says the board voted 4-2 to close the school after a discussion about how best to use federal stimulus dollars earmarked for school improvement projects.
Board member Lee Brandvold of Ryder cast one of the votes against the idea. He says he and some other parents now plan to open-enroll their children at schools outside the district.
Hanson says no teachers will lose their jobs because of the school closure but the future of custodial staff and cooks isn't yet known.
