Man gets 2 years as accomplice in deputy shooting

MAHNOMEN, Minn. (AP) — An accomplice in the February shooting of a Mahnomen County Sheriff's deputy has been sentenced to two years in prison.

MAHNOMEN, Minn. (AP) — An accomplice in the February shooting of a Mahnomen County Sheriff's deputy has been sentenced to two years in prison.

Twenty-seven-year-old Daniel Vernier pleaded guilty this summer to failing to render assistance to the critically wounded deputy. He was sentenced Wednesday.

As part of his plea deal, a number of other charges were dropped and he'll be a key witness in the trial of Thomas Fairbanks, who allegedly pulled the trigger.

Deputy Chris Dewey is still recovering in a Colorado hospital. He was shot on Feb. 18 while investigating a suspected drunken driver.
