Applications sought for academies

Sens. Byron Dorgan and Kent Conrad and Rep. Earl Pomeroy, all D-N.D., are accepting applications from young North Dakotans interested in attending one of the nation’s military service academies for a four-year college education.

All three offices will accept applications for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., the Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colo., the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., and the Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, N.Y. Deadline for submitting an application is Oct. 31.

North Dakotans who will be high school graduates by July 1, 2010, or who are already high school graduates and between 17 and 23 years old by July 1, 2010, are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, unmarried and have no dependents.

Those who attend military academies are committed for a time to serving their country in the military.

Students should have demonstrated excellence in academics, athletics and personal character. Applicants should also possess strong leadership qualities. Anyone seeking to learn more can call or visit the congressional offices, or visit the following Web sites:

Military academy interviews are scheduled to be held Nov. 19 in Bismarck and Nov. 20 in Fargo. The delegation will make its nominations to the military academies in December.
