SPEARFISH, S.D. (AP) — The first snow of the season is in the forecast for western South Dakota.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for late Wednesday through Thursday evening for the Black Hills, saying there is potential for “significant” snow accumulation in the higher elevations.

The forecast says rain is expected to mix with snow in the far west overnight. The higher elevations in the Black Hills might get up to six inches of snow on Thursday.

John Wetenkamp, a Weather Service meteorologist in Rapid City, said the ground also could be white in the Lead and Deadwood areas.
