125 more graves marked at former state hospital in Minnesota

ROCHESTER, Minn. (AP) — Another 125 markers have been placed at the old Rochester State Hospital cemetery, putting names on graves that had been marked only with numbers.

ROCHESTER, Minn. (AP) — Another 125 markers have been placed at the old Rochester State Hospital cemetery, putting names on graves that had been marked only with numbers.

A ceremony Sunday honored the people buried at the cemetery, where several hundred markers have been placed in the past three years.

Between 1866 and 1997, almost 13,000 Minnesotans living in state institutions were buried anonymously. That includes 2,019 at the former Rochester State Hospital cemetery. Of the 13,000, named stones have replaced numbered markers at 5,050 graves.

The project is the work of the Rochester State Hospital Cemetery Recognition Group, which teamed up with Remembering with Dignity, a project of the St. Paul-based Advocating Change Together.
