The state does not have a hunting season on moose. The elk hunting season is under way, but Kintigh said its unlikely that the moose was mistaken for an elk.
The young male moose had been spotted in recent weeks in Custer State Park and other areas in the Black Hills.
The Turn In Poachers program is offering a $1,000 reward for the identification and arrest of whoever is responsible for the moose death.
