Old Grand Forks tower being razed

Grand Forks officials say demolition of the city's old ``Smiley' water tower will take about two days.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — Grand Forks officials say demolition of the city's old ``Smiley' water tower will take about two days.

The razing of the 77-year-old tower with a painted smile and a wink had been scheduled last week but was delayed until this week due to high winds.

A statement from the city says crews will start dismantling the tower at the top and work their way down, using torches to cut it and a crane to lower the pieces to the ground.

Some wanted to keep the old tower as a landmark but city officials said it would cost too much.
