RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — A Black Hills company is dipping into the recycle bin to make asphalt for roads.

Hills Materials is using old asphalt and other things like roof shingles and ground up tires for what’s called “green” asphalt. It also can be applied at much lower temperatures.

Company President Lynn Kading said there’s a 20 percent energy savings per ton in using warm asphalt applied at 70 degrees instead of hot asphalt at 300 degrees.
